Hecks v. Peel

Part 1

Hecks v. Peel

Case brought by Edmund Hecks of Oldham Attorney at Law. In 1791 his brother William Hecks was employed as a clerk or superintendent by Robert Peel, William Yates, Thomas Tipping and James Halliwell of Manchester merchants and calico printers co-partners trading under the firm of Messrs Peel & Co. Edmund Hecks agreed to act as security for William Hecks (as he was dealing with large sums of money) and signed a bond for this for £1000. William Hecks has since absconded overseas after embezzling funds. Edmund Hecks claims that he came to an agreement with William Yates to pay back the money in installments and had in fact paid back part of it. However, he is now bringing the case against Peel & Co as they have taken his original bond to the Kings Bench and are claiming back the full £1000.
